Arts Grant Presents- Intro to Blacksmithing

This is an introductory blacksmithing class for students with no prior experience. Students will learn the basics of traditional blacksmithing to produce functional and decorative works. Equipment, tools, and safety concerns will be covered, as well as an introduction to techniques, metallurgy, and iron history. Students will be able to complete a simple project to take home, such as functional hooks, a candle holder, or a creative piece. This workshop is from four to six hours long. Appropriate attire will be required and consists of cotton clothing, closed shoes, and no shorts. Long sleeves are recommended. All materials and safety equipment will be provided.

Class size is limited to 10 students, adults and teens (with permission).

I, as a patron of the Grafton Community Library, Grafton NY, am engaged in attending and
participating in a Blacksmithing Workshop held by the Grafton Community Library. I understand that
the workshop will involve the use of manual tools and coke forges using high heat.
I am aware of and understand the possibility of serious injury from using the tools/equipment,
machinery and related materials, and I agree to obey standard safety rules and practices while using
or operating tools, equipment and machines and I agree to use or operate them in an otherwise safe
manner. I also agree to refrain from using any tool for which I have not had proper instruction, I agree
that I will keep myself and others safe while using tools, equipment, forges, and machinery during the
course of the workshop and hereby agree to follow the instructors’ requests.
I understand and agree to use the provided safety equipment, at all times, and to come to the
workshop with the proper clothing as specified at registration, which includes cotton long sleeved
shirt, long pants and closed toe shoes.
I hereby assume the risk and responsibility of any and all injuries that I may sustain or cause in the
pursuit of any activities while on the premises. Also I hereby release and forever discharge and agree
to defend and hold harmless, Grafton Community Library and any of its employees, volunteers or
instructors from any actions, suits, damages, claims or judgments that may result from any personal
injury I may sustain or that I may cause while on the premises of Grafton Community Library while
engaged in the Blacksmithing Workshop. I also understand that I am responsible for paying all costs
resulting from medical treatment received as a consequence of using tools, equipment, forges and
machinery in the workshop.
